In 1971 comes our smallest batch of newcomers since 1925. Our “screening committee” saw fit to add a mere twenty-one fellows to the ranks of candidacy. This is also our second-to-last quinquennial election. After 1976, we go to an annual election cycle.

Meanwhile, our newcomers this time include Yogi Berra and a guy nicknamed The Big Bear. They include a Duke and two Earls. Sort of. There are also some tough-luck guys. For example, one who lost a perfect game…in the thirteenth inning; the one man to reach fifty percent in the BBWAA’s voting but never gain enshrinement in the Coop, and the fellow who hit the famously long fly that Willie Mays basket-caught in the 1954 World Series.

This year we again open seven slots to our newcomers. We carry over two slots from 1906, two from 1921, five from 1931, three from 1941, one from 1956, and two from 1961 for a total of 22 possible honorees.
