1983 New Candidates

1983 was the first year that Eric played little league. After swinging any bat he could find. After playing as much catch as his father and neighborhood pals would allow for. After hitting the cover off the ball during games. After putting heart and soul into that season, the coach’s last words as the team went their separate ways: “Eric, you got to work on your running.”

That’s life between the lines.

Our 1983 election features one newcomer whose divisive performance outside the lines still divides the baseball community. Another is famous for leaping across the line to snag surefire doubles. And yet another, pictured to the right, loves a good line when it means folks are cueing up for his ‘Que.

That’s a lot of meat!

With three honorees in 1982, we took back the slot we deferred in 1981 and are once more down to nine of those in addition to two new slots that open up to make eleven for 1983.

  1. Interesting crew.
I read your initial comments on how you would set up your HofF and noted your take on the Negro Leagues. Wondered if you’d come to any final conclusion on when/if to add Negro League players. Curiosity on my part.

    • We talked a lot about the NgLs as we started up. Essentially we figured we’d never get off the ground if we included them because the research requirements are much steeper and knottier than MLB.

However, we have talked many times about what we might do after we complete the MLB guys, and NgLers are an obvious next step. Especially given players such as Campy or Doby whose chances without their pre-MLB play are limited but for whom that playing time would make a substantial difference when their careers are taken as a whole.
