For Eric, 1986 is the first year he was really aware of who the Baseball Hall of Fame elected. This year’s big newbie Willie McCovey, Bobby Doerr, and Ernie Lombardi. Not that he knew anything about them other than that McCovey was one of the 500 home run guys.
Needless to say, Eric is now keenly aware of anyone elected to various Halls. But it is interesting that Doerr and Lombardi stood in Cooperstown’s backlog queue for a long, long time. Just as they do at the Hall of Miller and Eric.
One thing you learn in a process like this: The longer they have to wait in your own Hall, the harder it is to criticize the Hall in upstate New York. It’s easy to scorch the Coop on Ron Santo or Chick Hafey; not so much on guys like Hughie Jennings or Harry Hooper. Or Doerr and Lombardi.
