1996 New Candidates

Bill McKechnie

“Take care of the percentages, and they will take care of you.”—Bill McKechnie

Bill McKechnie would have loved our 1996 newbies. He turned around several teams by revamping their defenses into fortresses. He stressed pitching to contact and letting his fielders hoover up sure base hits.

This group includes several renowned defenders, including the best fielding first baseman in history, one of history’s best fielding catchers, a multiple Gold Glove winning second baseman, and a centerfielder nicknamed The Jet. It also includes two famous ground ball pitchers to start and end the game. And for good measure, because there are two centerfielders on the list, the lesser can play a corner where he’ll be a plus glove.

They won’t all make the HoME, of course, but they would make McKechnie swoon, and we wouldn’t bet against his winning a pennant with them.
